How this powerful off-roader becomes the emblem of freedom, adventure and passion is the thing that might have intrigued you at some point in time.

With the magic of persistence, commitment, passion and hard work, the automakers shaped the battlefield Jeeps to modern-day SUV cars, making them incredibly capable for all kinds of off-road adventures.

Below we’ve presented you with the brief history of Jeep from Battlefields to Driveways. Dive into the classic tale of adventure and create your own timeless story being part of the iconic Jeep family.

The Beginning

Jeep served out as the war vehicle for American Army during World War II. The Jeep was named from the acronym GP (General Purpose). Some people believe that the automaker was influenced by the character from the Popeye Comic called Eugene the Jeep, from which the Jeep name was derived.

Wherever the name came from, it is still reverberating in the minds of SUV lovers globally.

The credit for developing first off-roader goes to American Bantam Car Company of Butler, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately even being the leading car manufacturer of the time, it couldn’t win the bid announced by the American Government.  After the Bantam failed to meet the Army’s design criteria, the government contracted Wikes-Overland and, later with Ford.

Eventually, after the World War II, Willy was handed over the permanent contract to make the vehicle on mass-scale.

Transformation into a Commercial Vehicle

While the Jeep served an important part in World War II, people across the United States were drawn to its distinctive look and strong capabilities.

Demand for a civilian version of the Jeep surged after the war ended.  Willys responded to public demand by creating the Civilian Jeep (CJ) – 2A, which was eventually succeeded by another renowned vehicle, the Wrangler.

Soon after the CJ – 2A became popular; Willys contributed to Jeep’s evolution as an independent brand by introducing the Station Wagon and Jeepster to the public.

However, the Jeep’s fortunes turned upside down, as the rights to the vehicle design were handed down from Willys to Kaiser, then to the American Motors Corporation, and finally to Chrysler, who still owns it.

Jeep World

Chrysler declared bankruptcy after being laid off by Daimler and immobilized by the recession.

Instead of entirely failing, it was purchased by Fiat to become what is today known as FiatChrysler Automobiles (FCA).

Cherokee returned as a crossover and introduced the Renegade in pint size.

Jeep also introduced the 707-horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk at the 2017 New York Auto Show, a vehicle that American bantam designers indeed couldn’t have envisioned.

After discontinuing manufacturing of the XJ-based Comanche in 1992, Jeep exited the pickup sector. The Gladiator, a truck based on the fourth-generation Wrangler, made its long-awaited return at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The vehicle was only available with four doors and a variety of engines, including a V6 turbo diesel. Jeep sells almost a million vehicles each year and this number is growing every day.
